Washoe County Parole vs Probation
Parole follows release from a Nevada Department of Corrections institution. The Nevada Board of Parole Commissioners makes the parole decision, but the Nevada Division of Parole and Probation, commonly called P&P, carries out community supervision. Probation comes from a court sentence and may begin without any NDOC prison stay. A probation record therefore cannot be treated as proof that the person was released from prison.
| Point | Parole | Probation |
|---|---|---|
| Who orders it | Nevada Board of Parole Commissioners grants parole under the sentence framework. | The criminal court imposes probation as part of its judgment. |
| Custody history | The person leaves NDOC institutional custody for community supervision. | The person may never have served an NDOC prison term. |
| Who supervises | Nevada Division of Parole and Probation. | Nevada Division of Parole and Probation. |
| Best durable sources | NDOC status, Board action, Nevada S.A.V.E., then P&P. | Court judgment, Nevada S.A.V.E. when covered, then P&P. |
| How it ends | Sentence completion or an authorized early discharge. | Court-ordered completion, expiration, or discharge under the governing order. |
Verify Washoe County Post-Release Supervision
No single public screen supplies every step from a parole hearing through physical release and active supervision. Use the Nevada sources as a sequence, and match the NDOC number whenever two people share a name.
- Start with the NDOC Offender Search. Search by offender ID when possible, or by name. Look for the exact status and location language, including a parole or release status.
- Check Nevada S.A.V.E. The current statewide service covers participating custody and supervision events. Read the source agency because a supervision result is not a jail booking.
- Review the Monthly Parole Actions. Search the correct month by surname and verify the NDOC number, action date, and effective or denied-to field.
- Separate a grant from release. A grant still depends on eligibility, clearance of holds, and approval of a parole plan. Call Board Pre-Release for a grant that has not yet produced an NDOC release event.
- Confirm the Reno supervision route. Use the current P&P directory or the Reno office line for reporting-office questions. Use dispatch for a time-sensitive violation or warrant concern.
- Obtain the underlying record when needed. NDOC, the sentencing court, or P&P remains the source of record when a public portal is blank, dated, or unclear.
Note: The evidence chain is hearing, Board action, effective eligibility, approved plan, release event, and then active Washoe County supervision.
Washoe County Parole Decision Records
The Board and P&P have different powers. The Board publishes monthly hearing schedules, eligibility materials, and Monthly Parole Actions. It has no sworn officers who supervise a person in Reno. P&P receives the approved community plan, sets reporting logistics within the order, and enforces conditions.
The Board generally holds a hearing before the earliest eligibility point so the proposed plan can be investigated. A schedule only means a matter is set for review. An action may be granted, denied to a later date, continued, postponed, or rescheduled. Some panel results require ratification. Even a final grant does not authorize departure before the eligibility date or before the plan is approved.
Monthly Actions can appear later than a reader expects. The Board warns that a matter heard near the end of a month may be published in the following report. Search adjacent months before deciding no action exists. A location or institution change can also move a scheduled case, and NDOC, not the Board, calculates the underlying eligibility and expiration values. Those limits make the NDOC number a vital cross-check.

Washoe County Supervision Office Contacts
Reno-area parole and probation questions belong with the Nevada Division of Parole and Probation. The live DPS directory is the best source for the assigned reporting location because office assignments can differ from the address a person used at release.

Reno office: 775-684-2300
General P&P: 775-684-2600
Reno/Carson dispatch: 775-687-0400, available around the clock
Directory: Nevada P&P Contact Us
For a parole grant that is still awaiting a physical release, the Nevada Board of Parole Commissioners Pre-Release section is the better contact at 775-687-5040. The Board’s general office is at 1677 Old Hot Springs Road, Suite A, Carson City, with a general line of 775-687-5049. These contacts answer different questions, so state whether the issue is a decision, a pending plan, an active reporting assignment, or a possible violation.
Washoe County Supervision Violations and Warrants
Conditions vary with the judgment, Board order, risk assessment, and approved plan. They can govern reporting, travel, treatment, association, residence, or other conduct stated in the controlling documents. Public summaries are not a substitute for the signed terms provided to the supervised person.
A violation allegation also does not prove that parole or probation was revoked. P&P investigates and routes the matter through the process that applies to the supervision type. A warrant can lead to arrest and a return to custody, but the court or Board record is needed to understand the legal result.
For a direct Washoe County supervision concern, use the Reno P&P office or Reno/Carson dispatch. A court warrant source can corroborate a judicial warrant, but should not be used to infer a P&P disposition that it does not show. Nevada S.A.V.E. may carry a supported supervision event, yet periodic portal data is not the signed warrant or final violation order.
Washoe County Reentry Before Supervision
Washoe County has two distinct local transition layers. The WCSO Detention Services Unit describes its work as a bridge between people preparing to leave the Washoe County Detention Facility and community resources. Its published Community Resource Guide and outreach contact are release-planning aids, not proof that someone has actually left custody.
Northern Nevada Transitional Housing adds a state-custody route in Reno. Residents may take part in community programming while approaching term expiration or parole eligibility, but they remain in NDOC custody at the Sunshine Lane facility. An NDOC result naming NNTH is not an active community-supervision result. The later change to parole status, NDOC release transaction, or discharge record marks the custody event.
This distinction matters when a family hears that someone is “in transition.” WCSO release planning, residence at NNTH, an approved parole plan, and active P&P supervision are four different stages. The Washoe County released-inmate search guide explains how to confirm the custody record behind the transition.
Washoe County Records After Release
A former Washoe County Detention Facility inmate can use existing SmartInmate credentials to download personal photos, messages, and scanned postal mail after release without charge. The person logs in with the inmate number and password. This unusual local access can preserve personal material that would otherwise be hard to retrieve after the live booking disappears.
SmartInmate content is not a government release certificate and is not the official booking photograph. It does not establish whether the person went to the community, NDOC, another county, or federal custody. For a release timestamp and disposition, request the detention release transaction from WCSO Records. For a supervision status, use NDOC, the Board, Nevada S.A.V.E., and P&P as appropriate.
Note: Personal messages and photos in SmartInmate differ from booking records maintained by the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office.
How Washoe County Supervision Ends
Post-release supervision ends through the legal path tied to the sentence or judgment. A parolee may reach sentence completion or receive an authorized early discharge. A probationer may complete the court-ordered term or receive a discharge reflected in the case record. Until that step occurs, a person living in Reno can remain under enforceable supervision even though no jail or prison holds the person.
Use the final document, not an assumption based on elapsed time. For parole, compare NDOC status, Board early-discharge action when applicable, and P&P confirmation. For probation, read the sentencing court docket and obtain the discharge order when the entry is abbreviated. Nevada record-sealing waiting periods commonly run from the later of release from actual custody or discharge from parole or probation, which makes the end date legally significant.
Washoe County court records are divided by jurisdiction. A felony or gross-misdemeanor probation case may reach the Second Judicial District Court, while a township or municipal matter follows the court named on the judgment. Start with that named court rather than assuming every probation discharge appears in one countywide portal. Request the actual minute or order if a docket label does not state whether supervision ended successfully, was revoked, or continued.
A portal no-result is weak evidence. Names can be entered differently, public coverage may end after discharge, and sealed records can change what a public search returns. A dated agency record that identifies the person, case or NDOC number, and discharge action is the sound endpoint for a Washoe County post-release supervision check.
